The Challenge

With over 195 sites and a complex labour requirement across the UK, Biffa needed a trusted partner to manage its flexible workforce – ensuring full compliance, workforce continuity, and cost efficiency. They also wanted to align labour strategies with their broader ESG priorities, including Modern Slavery prevention and community engagement. Balancing commercial needs with ethical, consistent supply across sites required a collaborative, values-led approach.

The Approach

Through our national managed service, Smart Solutions became Biffa’s single point of contact for all flexible labour. We seamlessly transitioned a panel of suppliers into the Smart model, enabling smoother processes, consolidated invoicing, and stronger compliance control. Together, we tackled key priorities, from supporting social impact hiring and onboarding like-minded suppliers, to embedding our SmartSCOR+ system to drive worker performance and retention across MRFs. Our joint focus on transparency, sustainability and ethical supply chains remains central to the partnership.
